Trashinator

A robot that picks up trash

Trashinator

For my Advanced Autonomous Machines class (16.84), a senior seminar dedicated to building a robot of our choice, we built a robot that can detect and pick up trash using the Clearpath jackal robot. I was on the perpection team and the motion planning team.

The diagram below shows how the robot’s pipeline turns a detection into a pickup.

Perception find trash in the robot’s surroundings (my team) Motion planning plan a path that drives the Jackal to the trash (my team) Pickup collect the piece of trash trash location target reached Clearpath Jackal mobile robot carries the sensors and pickup hardware and executes the planned path sensor data drive commands mounted on the base

Figure: how a detection becomes a pickup — perception locates the trash, motion planning drives the Jackal to it, and the pickup stage collects it.
